Judgements
How to tell which kind of judgement is wrong and which kind is right? For the Lord Himself condemns judgement, and yet that is in itself a judgement.
In my previous text I explained how man is bound by his circumstances, by which I do not mean that man is nonfree, but rather that his freedom is contingent upon the choices that have been given to him by reality. For instance, a man cannot travel from Brazil to Japan without first purchasing a ticket plane in Brazil. As such, any kind of ideal is not fully achievable unless we are in ideal circumstances, and I’m not sure that these exist.
There are therefore 2 kinds of judgements. The first kind is the kind in which a person sees the other and, seeing the ideal which that person is aiming for, judges that ideal as good and starts desiring the same ideal. This is called judgement because it uses our intellect in order to discern whether an act is good or bad, but it should not be seen as the same kind of judgement that has been condemned, but rather as a form of discernment.
The second kind arises when a person sees another one’s qualities and envies them, for they do not desire that that person achieves results which he himself does not have. This is the kind of judgement that has been condemned and is bad for several reasons, but here I outline one: it indicates a lack of comprehension about what I’ve mentioned regarding circumstances, as the person judging forgets the fact that he himself and everyone else is contingent upon their own circumstances, as such, one should not be angry or envy because another achieved greater results than him, for their circumstances may differ and each must do what is best with their circumstances. Therefore, one may be stronger and another weaker, but neither are in wrong paths; rather, they may have been given different circumstances. And similarly there is also the possibility of the opposite scenario: when one sees a person doing worse than them in some aspect, and a feeling of pride arises; this is also condemned, as again it indicates the same lack of understanding about the circumstances.
